Celebrate, Learn, EAT!

Let’s celebrate the local abundance of food and community in the Shenandoah Valley!

Food Day is a national event on October 24. We are recognizing it here in the Valley with all sorts of events: workshops, farm tours, festivals. Join us as we celebrate local agriculture that is working towards environmental, economical, and social sustainability. Read our Food Day blog, find an event in your area, or learn more about agriculture in the Shenandoah Valley.

An excellent idea! Shop local, buy local, eat local.
I am a frequent customer at the Farmers Market in Harrisonburg (with my dog – - before 9:00 am, of course). My wife likes to get poultry and meats at the Dayton Farmers Market. She gets pie filling and cheeses at the Shenandoah Heritage Market. I get fresh peanut butter, almond butter and honey at the Friendly City Food Co-op. We get a fresh, local turkey for Thanksgiving. We use herbs grown at Shenandoah Growers. I stop at roadside stands around the County for fresh veggies, and pumpkins next week. Of course, we still use the grocery stores, but we think about what we can get local first.
You keep the Valley strong and dollars circulating locally when you buy local.Check out the Chamber of Commerce website (www.hrchamber.org) for local businesses.
Celebrate Food Day on October 24th, but think about local agriculture and shopping local 365 days a year.

Sounds like you are certainly living local, Frank! Thanks very much for your thoughtful and supportive comments!

Thank You! I am a farmer, Double O Farm, and all of the local farmers appreciate your support. If everyone would try to have some of their food allowance spent on locally grown products it would help us so much. Buy local. Support your farmers. Thanks Again Frank, Candy Olsen Double O Farm
